This commentary combines close textual study of the text of the Commedia with the examination of a number of knotty problems found in the exegetical history of the poem: its relationship to its classical and biblical antecedents, significant moments in the poet's intellectual development, the nature of the poem's allegory, and the active role of the reader. Along with a rich sense of the history of Dantean exegesis, these volumes offer themselves as a bridge between Italian and international commentary on the Commedia.
