Dr Faber, a Dutch pastoral psychologist, is already known in Britain for his book on Pastoral Care in the Modern Hospital. Here he tries to develop a deeper and wider view of life than immediate everyday reaction, rethinking old rules and seeking to give them new content, in search of a viable modern spirituality. He takes his title from mountain scenery, and indeed his whole book is modelled on an expedition into the hills, beginning in the village at the foot, going through the woods and emerging above the treeline, with the path so far travelled visible below, and the prospect of the summit ahead. With the sympathetic wisdom of his years, Dr Faber provides not only some vivid imagery but also encouragement and stimulation.
