It shows students how each region has its own history, yet are all interrelated due to the colonial context. The book explores how the First Amendment to the American Constitution separated religion from the state, and also explores the debated idea of the United States as a Christian nation, and why that has been a persistent narrative in America's history.

The book discusses Christianity and politics, Christians and the abortion divide, Catholicisms, Protestantisms, and Evangelical Christianities, as well as religious freedom. Over 80 illustrations are included throughout, and each chapter includes guidance on further reading.
