These Forty Days is a devotional companion for the season of Lent and refers to the forty days from Ash Wednesday to Easter as well as the wonderful nineteenth-century hymn of Claudia F. Hernaman, "Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days. The Scripture passage concerning the devil tempting Jesus is set within a period of fasting and prayer that is preparation for Jesuss public ministry and passion. It is notable throughout the Scriptures that times of desert preparation precede significant ministry. This is why the church early on began to observe the season preceding Easter as an appropriate time for special spiritual focus. The rhythms of fasting and feasting, desert and oasis, discipline and joy are not only well known to Gods people; they seem to be essential components of spiritual growth. These Forty Days is a simple guide for reading Scripture, reflection, prayer, and response.
